Task 2- Reading and Notetaking

In task 2 we were asked to complete the assignment which involved reading two articles, the articles were based on swine flu and bird flu. The assignment was based on how to read articles and take notes. The two articles that we were asked to look at were:

· Pallab Ghosh (2012) Bird flu 'could mutate to cause deadly human pandemic’. London: British Broadcasting Corporation [Online]. Available from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-18534676. Accessed November 2012
· Sharon Begley (2012) 2009 swine flu outbreak was 15 times deadlier: study. New York: Thomas Reuters [Online] Available from: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/25/us-swineflu-idUSBRE85O1DF20120625. Accessed November 2012.
We identified that there are several ways of note taking and each person usually uses two of the ways. I found that I used mind mapping and linear notes (Bullet points) mostly and preferred that to short hand and abbreviations. Once we completed our individual work on these articles we were asked to see at least one other student and compare what similarities and differences we had. I compared my work with Emma my friend but also class friend too.
I found this task useful as I will be going to university and sitting in a lot of seminars where I need to take notes, identifying which note taking method is best for me will be to my advantage. It will benefit me greatly and learning how to read articles quickly will also be useful.

Task 1- Gathering and Using Information

In the first task we were asked to use our knowledge to gather and use information around infectious diseases. This task wanted us to broaden our gathering skills and taught us to gather information from a range of sources including books, journals, websites etc. I have never used or searched for any journals before this task so it helped me understand how to get hold of the information which will be an advantage when I progress into university after this course. This task also asked us to look and evaluate the authenticity of the sources we had used. This gave me a greater insight into how much you can believe and trust information on the internet. I have learnt that journals are more reliable sources than the internet websites.
